Episode 282. The Future ~ Part 2

This is The ChangeUnderground for the 13th of December 2021.

I’m your host, Jon Moore

Decarbonise the Air, Recarbonise the Soil!

As we discussed last episode, a confluence of events pointed to supply chain issues and possible food supply shortages. Things like rising energy costs, fertiliser costs, personnel shortages in key parts of the supply chain and so on.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered the truly remarkable substance AdBlue. I’d seen this being promoted some time in the past decade as a diesel additive, or so I thought. It turns out this is a diesel exhaust additive. Squirted into the exhaust of diesel engines it removes nitrogen oxide and replaces it with nitrogen and water. AdBlue is a compound of deionised water and…. Wait for it…. Urea!  Continue reading →

Decarbonise the Air, Recarbonise the Soil!

It has been rightly said that prediction is a difficult business, especially about the future. But let’s not worry too much about that.

There are things occurring in this world that raise concerns. Fear not dear listener, this not about the illuminati nor any other conspiracy theory. Today I wish to look with cold reason upon some price changes over the last six months or so, commodity production figures and some near term climate forecasts. So with the ground rules established, let’s dive in. Continue reading →

A little follow on from last week, from Politico.eu comes a post entitled: Britain’s half-arsed climate summit

Quote:

LONDON — It wasn’t quite the coming out party post-Brexit Britain had dreamed of.

The COP26 climate summit, long pitched by advocates in the British government as an opportunity to project the United Kingdom’s continued influence on the global stage, came to an emotional close last weekend with the U.K. hosts having done just about enough to get a pass mark, despite the best efforts of parts of the government.

So they’ve reached a consensus in Glasgow.

From, the UN press release:

Quote:

  • Adaptation, mitigation and finance are all strengthened in a complex and delicate balance supported by all Parties.
  • After six years of strenuous negotiations, pending items that prevented the full implementation of the Paris Agreement on carbon markets and transparency have finally been approved.

Episode 276. Will COP26 Matter?

This is The ChangeUnderground for the 1st of November 2021.

Decarbonise the Air, Recarbonise the Soil!

Global temperatures have already risen by at least a degree celsius (Link in the SN). Our highly esteemed PM, Scotty from marketing has been described by Niki Savva as some one who avoids problems until they become catastrophes before mishandling them. Or words to that effect. Well last week he managed, (mismanaged?) the Liberal Party’s relationship with the National Party to produce a nett zero by 2050 plan. A plan the Australian people haven’t seen and probably doesn’t exist.

Here’s a couple of clips, firstly our PM and then our deputy PM showing just how united we aren’t. Continue reading →

Episode 275. The Miracle that is a Seed

This is The ChangeUnderground for the 25th of October 2021.

I’m your host, Jon Moore

Decarbonise the Air, Recarbonise the Soil!

From a seed all things are possible. The magic that is a seed still amazes and surprises me, every time I plant. Equally, every time I plant seeds I feel a frisson of panic and anxiety. What’s going on down there? Are things “working”? But once the seeds break ground, I feel like a new parent. It really is remarkable that this still happens every time but there you go. I also worry and pace while chook is broody so maybe it’s just the expectation of new life.  Continue reading →

Episode 274. Facing the Critics

Decarbonise the Air, Recarbonise the Soil!

Meat is Bad, Okay?

As we covered back in episode 272: Methane, the arguments against the continuation of certain agricultural practices may be based in opinions rather than a critical analysis of the science. And if we get it wrong, we could be driving towards a hell on earth. And that destination is not in my satnav. What a quaint word, satnav. I’ve never used one and maps, Apple or Google does what those horrendously expensive toys used to do. They have gone the way of the pager, the fax and the typewriter. Are we to stand by and watch the cow, the sheep and all the other ruminants follow them into the dustbin of history? Continue reading →

Episode 273. Smallholdings: Tools & Equipment

This is The ChangeUnderground for the 11th of October 2021.

I’m your host, Jon Moore

Decarbonise the Air, Recarbonise the Soil!

This week is about the practical but that does not preclude the need to think critically about decisions. Let’s set some definitions.

A smallholding covers a multitude of options. I was listening to the Tasmanian Country Hour last week. They were reporting on a small farming event and one of their speakers had a holding of 100 acres. To me that’s not a smallholding but it’s a mindset thing as much as a land size thing.  Continue reading →
