Flower Show Drives Home Message of Organic Farming

KOZHIKODE: Pointsettia, orchids, gerbera, all wave at you as you walk into the wide stretch of Marine Ground, braving the brazen heat. And for sure, in no time, one discovers that the endeavour is not in vain. Being organised under the banner of the Calicut Agri Horticultural Society, the Kozhikode Marine Ground is once again hosting the radiant flower show for the 39th time.

Adding colours to the show this time, the society aims to inculcate the habit of including fruits and vegetables produced through organic farming in the Kozhikoden diet by setting up and promoting the theme of organic biofarming.

Apart from a wide range of stalls under the government of Kerala, many other stalls from various nurseries from different parts of the state are also participating in the show this time. The show offers not only a wide range of flowers, but also seedlings and saplings of various fruits and vegetables and even bonsais. The Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development Board, ‘Thengin Thai Valarthu Kendram’ at Thikkodi, coming under the Department of Agriculture, have all come up with their genuine pro-nature produce that can be tended to even in the barest of space. “We intend to promote a sense of agriculture, and to encourage the public to try growing at least three to four vegetables or fruits that they consume without the use of any pesticides or fertilizers,” says M A Jacob, general convenor of the show.
