Dispute over ‘organic’ label pits Michigan’s largest egg producer against family farm advocates

DS, MI – Do the “porches” on the giant egg production facilities at Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch near Saranac give it the right to claim the “organic” label?
Not according to The Cornucopia Institute, a Wisconsin-based advocacy group that promotes small-scale organic farming.
The group has included Herbruck’s Green Meadows organic egg production facilities near Saranac and a Herbruck contractor’s farm in Mulligan, near Flint, in a Dec. 10, 2014 complaint to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Based on aerial photographs taken on Aug. 15, 2014, the group claims Herbruck’s egg production facilities fail to meet USDA standards that are supposed to allow the birds outdoor access. Although there are outdoor porches, the photos show few hens using them, the group said.
