Episode 301. Starvation and Conflict Averted?

This is The ChangeUnderground for the 6th of June 2022.

Decarbonise the Air, Recarbonise the Soil!

Winter has arrived here in Tasmania. We were out for brunch with some in-laws, the wind howling outside and I checked the weather app. 10.3 but feels like -3.3. A very chilly -13 degree wind chill factor.

But the rain has started. We are considered to have a Mediterranean climate here in Tassie. Autumn took a while to wide up. Warm, above averagely warm with more forecast. La Nina is still pumping moisture onto the mainland which meant we were a little on the short side at some times last year. The predictability of weather is not what it once was. Climate change is affecting us all, to greater and lesser degrees. The early heat waves in India this year are far more serious than a latish start to the winter rains in Tasmania. The former has killed people, the later has not.  Continue reading →

Decarbonise the Air, Recarbonise the Soil!

There’s a link in the show notes to the original paper. Continue reading →

Episode 226. We Need a Regeneration Revolution

Decarbonise the air, recarbonise the soil!

Soil

Today we’re going to discuss regeneration in particular regeneration of the soil and ecosystems. Over the last 50 to 75 years, basically since the second world war we’ve gone through a period of destruction. In effect a faustian bargain in which we gave up 1% of our topsoil every year in return for production returns.

Industrial Agriculture

We did this by using chemicals: chemical fertilizers, chemical pesticides and herbicides and fungicides and it worked. There were lots of famines and people starving in the 1970s. A lot of the techniques developed with chemical inputs saved many people, kept them alive. But the cost! That bill is coming due and we need to pay for it now. If we wait, the cost will be so much higher. Continue reading →

Episode 157. The Horrors of CAFOs Plus GHGs ~ Regen ag fixes all that!

This is the World Organic News for the week ending the 25th of February 2019.

Jon Moore reporting!

Decarbonise the air, recarbonise the soil!

Just a quick note to let you know one our neighbours is weaning calves at present and they are incredibly loud. If some of that seeps into the I do apologise in advance.

We begin this week with a piece entitled: How Factory Farming Contributes to Global Warming from Ecowatch

Quote:

When you add it all up, the picture is clear—contemporary agriculture is burning up our planet. And factory farms or, in industry lingo, Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs), play a key role in this impending disaster.

End Quote

And then the piece talks about fossil fuel extraction and use, then: Continue reading →
